Histoires de Familles
2020 was a pivotal year, both personally and internationally. This is why I wanted to create a project that was both totally intimate and yet entirely collective; a project about memory and forgetting, family memory through family photo albums.
Histoires de Familles (“Families’ Stories”) is a gallery exhibition project in the form of visual wandering. The exhibition immerses you in the intimacy of family photographs taken in Martinique. The exhibition brings together photographs, an installation, and a photo novel.

The edition consists of 2 different formats and is constructed as a travel diary combining texts and images. The content is made up of texts from various extracts from works by Martinican authors and photographs from my family’s personal collection.
Histoires de Familles aims to reflect the complexity of Creole culture and transmits its richness through a rich iconography and colors inspired by Madras.

The edition is completed by a photo novel which brings a different sensitivity through the use of sound, written captions, and a voice over to support the narration.

The edition and the photo-novel are presented in a gallery exhibition. The exhibition creates a bridge between intimate and collective history by putting in view of all what was not intended to be: my family photos. In this exhibition, there are also a photographs display, an installation in the form of a giant book, and a projection of the photo-novel.

The exhibition creates a bridge between intimate and collective history by putting in sight of everyone what was not intended to be: my family photos. In this exhibition, there are also a photographs display, an installation in the form of a giant book, and a projection of the photo novel.
The first part of the exhibition consists of a wall of frames in the form of a pell-mell, reminiscent of our interior decorations. An installation in the form of a giant book and reproducing the structure of the edition is presented on the wall facing the frames. The strip format echoes an interior universe, reminiscent of wallpaper. In the second room, the photo novel is projected on the wall. This space has been rearranged as a living room to remind us of the slide-showing evenings.
